Mathematics
"Math is like going to the gym for your brain; it sharpens your mind." ~Danica McKellar
Most people grumble when they think about math, remembering the dull sessions where equations and formulas were drilled into their minds. But math doesn't have to be this way! My Pre-K class loves our afternoon math time, where we make bar graphs out of Legos and use giant dice to practice addition and subtraction. We even practice writing our numbers during free time, when they make receipts for the food they made for me during our game of "Restaurant Cafe." By including fun manipulative and unique twists on math concepts, we can teach our children that math is both important and exciting!
Activities that include mathematical development help preschoolers to recognize their number words and symbols, to count various objects, to combine and separate quantities of objects, to identify and name shapes, to recognize spacial awareness, to measure and compare different objects, to understand and use the concept of units, to understand and create basic patterns, and to collect and analyze data.
Materials for the classroom: counting bears, unit blocks (ones, tens, hundreds), graph paper, magnetic numbers, number blocks, rulers, yardsticks, different sized string, duct tape, magazines
