-clipboards (one per child) -blank paper -crayons (one per child)
(Materials for modifiers) -scissors -glue sticks
Modifiers/Scaffold
For an easier challenge: - Write the alphabet at the top of their paper. -Give them the Alphabet Sheet from the Clothesline Name activity
For most children: -Ask them where they could find words or letters in the classroom.
For a trickier challenge: -Have the students cut the letters out and glue them on another piece of paper to make their names.
Follow-up Ideas
-Play alphabet Bingo! Set up Bingo cards for all your students, and then play a fun round of Bingo together!
-For number recognition, ask students to go around looking for numbers instead of letters for this activity. Or, allow the students to look for both!
Originating Idea
For one of our activities, we took magazines and cut the different letters we found out and glued them to a piece of paper. My Pre-K students wanted to do more with this activity, and so the Letter Hunt activity was quickly born!
How to Make It
You place one worksheet on every clipboard, and then place a big box of crayons by the teacher's easel. Then you put all these materials next to the teacher's easel.
How to Implement It
During circle time, the teacher will sit with the students and sing the "ABCs" with them. Then, she will say, "Look at the letters on this poster!" She points to the poster. She will then say, "These different letters are hiding in our room! They're hiding on posters, in books, on signs, and even on toys! I want you to find our letters and write them on this piece of paper!" She will then have the students come up, grab their crayons and clipboards, and look for letters.
Most of the students will walk around the room and practice writing the different letters they see on the posters, toys, signs, ect. Earlier students will probably scribble on their paper and practice making straight and curly lines, while later students will practice writing out entire words or practice writing their name.
Once all the students are done, have everyone sit back down at circle time and talk about the different letters they found and where they found them. Then, the students should put their papers in their cubbies and then wash their hands for snack.
